December 2013 Christmas Pot Luck

The weather was a little stormy and icy, but we had a pretty good turn out for our annual Christmas Pot Luck Luncheon.  The food was amazing, the craft (a wreath made from Christmas patterned cotton strips) was fun to make, and the company and cheery conversation was great.  It was a good way to start the holiday season!!!!!
Not too many calories!!!

One way to use the Christmas Wreath - looking good!!

Upcoming Programmes

Sue McConville has submitted the details about our spring programmes. Looking good!!!!

December 09, 2013:  Christmas Pot Luck:  The holidays roll around quickly!  Bring your favourite main course or dessert to share.  It’s a great time to meet new friends and catch up with those you know.

We have a great craft for you to complete as well.  Would you believe it contains over 14,000 strips of fabric?

January 13, 2014: Trunk Show:  What better way to start the New Year than with a little inspiration?  Sharon Galna from Ajax will share her love of quilting and design in a presentation called “ Inspiration and Design”. Sharon was taught to sew at the age of 11 by her mother. She started out by making simple garments and continued with her love of sewing throughout public and high school by making her own clothes.  She took that love of sewing to the next level by studying fashion design at college. It was while in college in 1983 that she made her first quilt to celebrate her grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary and was immediately hooked.

She has had pieces juried into the Grand National Quilt Exhibition (2006, 2007, 2010).  Her work has also been shown at the Joseph Schneider Haus, the Oshawa Fibre Arts Show, the Visual Arts Centre of Clarington and the Mclean Community Centre, Ajax.

Jan Anderson - November Speaker

Jan Anderson returned!!!  This time this highly entertaining speaker showed us her unusual and beautiful take on quilting.  Her use of dyes, waxes, rust, etc. sure produced great stuff.  Also some of her exercises helped us warm up since the furnace was not working.

 Very fun and upbeat presentation.

Big Brothers and Sisters

Donna's charity this year is Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Kawartha Lakes - Haliburton Inc. This charity promotes and monitors long-term supportive friendships for children through quality relationships with caring adults. Jane and Jim from the organization spoke and encouraged our members get involved with the In-School Mentoring Program.  This program matches a child between the ages of 6 and 12 with an adult mentor. They meet once a week for one hour during school hours with the purpose of raising the child's self-confidence and self-esteem.  If you are interested contact their office at 117 Kent Street 705-324-6800.

Fall Programs

Our program coordinator Sue McConville has supplied the following information on our fall programs.  They sound amazing!!! Looks like we are in for an other great year.
September 9:  Truck Show by Stasia Ceglarz:  Stasia is a self taught fibre artist who is inspired by her flowers and gardens. When she emigrated from Poland twenty eight years ago she could not understand our patterns so decided to just make her own!  Using her own designs, she hand dyes and paints her fabrics before assembling the next creation.  We will all be inspired by her outgoing personality and love of fabric.
October 21, 2013:  The 65 Project Adventure: Our October meeting is 65 days from Christmas and the holidays.  Often we are looking for that last minute or small gift to give to a hostess, a grandchild, a teacher or a friend. To help us prepare, we are going to experience the 65 kilometre project adventure! Six talented presenters will spend 10 minutes each demonstrating a project that meets the following criteria:  It must cost 65.00 or less; all materials must be available within a 65 km radius of our meeting hall; if it can be done in 65 minutes or less - so much the better!  We will provide you with note taking paper so that you can jot down your ideas.  Join us and be inspired!

November, 2013:  Truck Show: November sees the return of Jan Anderson.  Many of you will remember her amazing "quilt exercise" program that she did in the spring.  Jan spoke at that time about her love of creating unique quilted items so she is coming back to share her work with us.  Jan is a great speaker and this will be a lot of fun.  She has also promised to take ten minutes from her trunk show to review a few of those exercises!

Ladies doing lunch at the Quilt Show

What could be better than having afternoon tea with friends at a wonderful Quilt Show.

Quilt Show Day 1

The crisp cool weather certainly helped send people to our Quilt Show.  The turn out was really good.  The quilting displays, vendors' booths, members' boutique, and tea room were, as usual, fantastic and busy.  With all the great quilt submissions it will be hard to pick the Viewers' Choice...
