President's Challenge

Donna demos a tradition block.  Way to go Jane...
As posted in September 2012, Donna has challenged us all to make an item from left over or newly made triangles. Submissions must be no smaller than a pot holder and no larger than a lap quilt.  Each project must contain at least one triangle.

The Categories are

  • Traditional.  Choose blocks using triangles of half square triangles.
  • What were you thinking.  This can be anything - using triangles.
  • Mixed media. This can involve using many different techniques with different embellishments to create your  piece.
The first prize in each category is a free quilting of the next queen size quilt you make.  Wow that's a motivator!!   These items must be given to Donna before or at the April meeting.

Show and Share March 2013

Even though our Snowbirds have not returned and a lot of our  "material girls" have headed for their annual exodus to Pennsylvania...we did have some wonderful items to see during Show and Share this month.

March 2013 Meeting

Diane McConachie presented her history of quilting with her trunk show.  She has grown from simple patch quilts to amazing complex blocks, applique, and  paper-pieced beauties.  Even though she hates public speaking, her narrative and  trunk show was great.  Thank you Diane.

Crazy Quilt Workshop Feb 2013

I just received the following comments and pictures from Karen Bright (Workshop Convenor).  She recently completed the Crazy Quilt class with Mary Anne Richardson.  Sounds and looks like they all had a great time.  Love the results....

Ramblings of a Rookie - by Karen Bright

WOW!!!!!!!!   Two days of Crazy Quilting with Mary Anne Richardson and I am ready to take more classes from her.  She is an amazing teacher and the class was so much fun.  It was attended by Pam Campbell, Donna MacDonald, Linda McLean, Vicki Gowan, Margaret Bell, Donna MacIntosh, Mary Ellen Kennedy, Emily Johnson (non member, found us on the blog) and myself.

As we cut and stitched, we learned many little tidbits about the technique of Crazy Quilting and its History.  You do not have to be an expert to do this type of quilting and there are many projects that you do using this technique.

It looks like there will be another class being held in the future, so take advantage and get your name on the waiting list.  There are already 6 names on the list.

Spreading the Word

Last Thursday Eleanor P and I headed to Peterborough and Port Hope...spreading the word and leaving promotional material at various quilt shops about our Quilt Show.  Needless to say we found lots of gorgeous material just waiting to be purchased!!!  We were very happy to oblige.  Tough job - but someone has to do it...

Mary McDonald owner of the Tangled Threads Quilt Shoppe in Peterborough was happy to display our promo kit at her shop.

Block of the Month Group

The block of the month club was at it again...having so much fun as they attempted to finish this month's block.  Apparently there was a lot of reverse sewing done today... there must have been something in the air.  What a great way to spend a chilly winter's day.  Can't imagine what this group will be like when spring fever hits!!!

Thanks for the pictures Chrissy.

The girls are getting wild....something was  in the air!!!

Merchants' Mall

The Guild's annual MERCHANTS' MALL was a successful and fun day.  Despite the rather rotten weather, rain and snow, the turnout was pretty good.  There were lots of quilted goodies, fabric, notions, and quilting services for sale.  We really do have a diverse and talented group!!!
Looks like deal making to me!!!!!

Paper Piecing Workshop

Eleanor Plewes conducted her paper piecing workshop on January 29th.  The lucky participants got to learn how to paper piece teapots and tea cups with our resident paper piecing expert.  From the looks on their faces and the results shown in the pictures below...they had a good day!!!!

5 inch squares

A big Thank You to all who brought in 5 inch squares.  They have been used by the Quilt Show Promotions Team to make fridge magnets.  A group of us gathered at Eleanor Plewes's place to create these items.  They will soon be distributed to some of your favourite quilt shops.  Fun day!!

A hard working bunch!!!!
