Little Quilt of the Month Group

On January 19th the Little Quilt of the Month group met for the first time. This month's theme was a Love Bear for Valentines Day. They looked so cute!! Some of the ladies will be using them as wall hangings and other will be using them as part of a quilt. This group will meet every third Thursday of the month (until June) to create a new quilt. What a great way to spend a cold winter afternoon. If the workshop committee decides to do a similar monthly session next year, I would highly recommend signing up and joining them.

Well I am getting there....
Step 3
Using my "same fabric" medium to dark 2 1/2 " squares and 2 1/2 light squares ....I have made a 120 (30 x 4) half square triangles....

DONE!!!

Step 4
Using the same fabric rectangles attach the matching half square triangles.....took a while to find the triangles - they were hiding under some new material!!

DONE!!!!

OK Betty Ann I am catching up....

On to step #5..yikes it looks like a ton of sewing...pizza for dinner tonight!

Table Runner Workshop

Elsie Hall held her table runner workshop on January 17th. This was a great workshop for beginners or really for anyone who wanted to spend a day creating something very pretty and useful. The various material used made each runner unique.

A bonus of taking a workshop is that you get to chat with fellow quilters.

Mystery Quilting Diary - Cutting

To motivate myself and to keep up to date with Betty Ann's instructions I am going to post my progress on the cutting and the sewing of the mystery quilt. My goal is to be caught up by the February meeting......

I have chosen the large scrappy quilt (fool) and I have cut out the 1590 pieces (360 rectangle and 1230 squares). That's the good news...the not so good news is:

Now I must sew them together (yikes)
I don't know if I like the scraps I have chosen
There does not appear to be any noticeable reduction in my stash!!
THIS IS ONLY THE CUTTING OUT....

Let the fun begin.

I shall keep you posted on my progress......

Quilt Show 2013 - Raffle Quilt

Yes we have started..... It seems like yesterday we just finished the Quilt for the 2011 show but Pam Campbell and Donna MacDonald have been holding workshops at Pam's studio and at Appleseed Quilt Shop for the quilt to be raffled in 2013. This quilt is going to be amazing!! We are all learning so many new techniques during the construction of this masterpiece. There is a lot of work to be done...so if you are interested in joining us at a workshop contact Donna MacDonald. She will be setting up more sessions in the new year. Here is a sneak preview of some of the squares..

Sue Carmichael the owner of the Quilters Cupboard quilt shop in Uxbridge was our guest speaker for November. Sue's quilt shop was featured in Quilt Sampler magazine in 2010 (an amazing accomplishment for a Canadian shop!!) plus Quilters Cupboard was voted Shop of the Year 2011 by Fab Shop.

During her inspirational talk Sue took us through the trials, tribulations, and joys of getting her shop to this level of excellence. Sue's motto of Fun, Friends Food and Fabric is a great slogan for all quilters. I can't wait for my next visit to the Quilters Cupboard.

There were also lots of goodies from the shop for sale.

Quilt Raises $730

Doris Bamlett's beautiful quilt raised $680 for the Ross Memorial Hospital's Imagining Department. A big thank you to all of you who purchased tickets. A special thanks to Mavella Smith from CQA who donated her "car mileage fee" to top the total raised to $730. Way to go Doris!!

BTW the winner of the quilt was Jean Moffit.

We asked for hats and we got them!! All kinds - vintage, decorated, and originals. Elsie Hall's challenge was a great success - and created a challenge in itself in determining the winners. However, with the help of her team of judges the winners were selected. They were:

Victorian Tea - October 17th

Our Victorian Tea celebrating our 25 years as a Guild was a huge success. It was standing room only - every one was there. We all looked amazing in our hats and in some cases period costumes.

The food was great, the entertainment was fun, (Lady Cordellion even had mayor Rick McGee bowing!!), and the company fantastic. What a perfect way to start the next 25 years!!!

It Takes A Village....

Sunday afternoon and early Monday morning a "village" of dedicated Guild members came to the church to help prepare food and decorate for our 25th Anniversary Victorian Tea. Many hours were spent off site planning, baking, buying supplies, and preparing decorations for our big day. It was hectic but we sure had fun!!! Eleanor Plewes and I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of you - what a great team!!

Elizabeth Dillinger, our first speaker for the 2011-12 season wowed us with her amazing collection of art quilts. Elizabeth’s quilts are a combination of piecing and raw appliqué. Paints and dyes are used to paint fabrics allowing her to create the color of fabrics needed to match the digital image she has created. Elizabeth’s thread painting and freestyle quilting are done on domestic sewing machines. Her quilts have won Awards of Excellence and Viewers’ Choice in Canada. She has won several awards in the United States including 1st place at the International Quilt Festival, the largest annual quilt show in the world. Elizabeth has been featured in Quilters Newsletter, Quiltmaker and is a regular featured artist in A Needle Pulling Thread, a Canadian magazine.

Planning for the New Guild Season

Lorna Bawden-Smith held an executive meeting in August to start planning the new guild season. Where did the summer go!!
Sharron Coxon and her Program and Workshop Committee have held meetings to plan and get, for our members, interesting and informative speakers. Plus great and fun workshops!! We know they will not disappoint.
Eleanor Plewes is co-ordinating the 25th Anniversary Victorian Lunch in October and she has been busy holding meetings, planning menus, decorations etc. It will be a day to remember!

I am looking forward to the 2011-2012 Guild meetings...I hope you are too.

It takes a good size group to keep the Guild running...

Our president Lorna Bawden-Smith chose RMH's "A new Day is Dawning" drive as her campaign this year. Her goal was to reach $1,500. from our monthly contributions. She did it!! She was able to give Brenda Dekoker, director of the RMH Foundation $1,504.13 at our June meeting. Brenda gave us a interesting history of the need and the drive for this equipment, and was most appreciative of our donation. Way to go Lorna!!

Raffle Quilt Nets $6,338.

We presented the Learning Disabilities Association with a cheque for $6,338. This amount was generated by the sale of raffle tickets for our quilt. What a great job done by our Guild. To all the members who helped make the quilt and sell the tickets..thank you. Great co-ordination job done Donna and Jean....all tickets sold...wow...hard shoes to fill next time!

Sometimes you are proud to be part of something and then sometimes you are over the moon about being part of something. I am totally over the moon about being part of this quilt show. Our Guild displayed their talent in quilt making, hosting a fantastic tea room, presenting a wonderful Members Boutique, attracting a tremendous sampling of vendors, and selling a record number of tickets for our raffle quilt. What a great two days and what a wonderful membership we have. Kudos to you Faye and your team of tireless workers!!!

Quilt Show Set Up

Today Guild volunteers headed to the Lindsay Curling Club to set up for our Quilt Show taking place this weekend. So much work is needed to ensure the show looks great and will be enjoyed by all our visitors and our members. From what I can see so far there are lots of beautiful quilts to view, tons of items in our boutique to buy, a great menu at the Tea Room, and lots of Vendors selling material and quilting items. It will be a great show...the doors open at 10:00am Saturday and Sunday.

May is Quilting Month

To celebrate National Quilting Month we are displaying quilts throughout the town. You will find quilts in the windows of seven Kent Street stores and also at Southern Comfort on Highways 7 and 36. The displays look great!!! It is well worth the stroll down Kent Street to see each one.

Doris' Donation

Doris Bamlett has donated a beautiful quilt to help our Guild raise funds for the Diagnostic Imaging Department's Redevelopment at Ross Memorial Hospital. Raffle tickets for $5.00 each will be available for members only to buy at our meetings. Faye Flood is the contact person. The draw on this quilt will be held at our Anniversary Meeting in October. Thank you Doris for this donation....I am sure we will raise a lot of money for the imaging equipment.

LCQG at the Lindsay Life Style Show 2011

Our Guild was brilliantly represented at the Lindsay Life Style Show 2011. Frances Emery got the troops together (with very little lead time) and co-ordinated the set up of a beautiful booth. The booth not only represented and highlighted our Guild activities but also gave us the opportunity to advertise our Quilt Show on May 28th and 29th and to sell raffle tickets for our quilt. A big thank you to all the members that willing came out to set up and to "man" the booth over the weekend.

Cobblestone Workshop - April 12th

Heather Stewart conducted her "Cobblestone" workshop on Tuesday and what a fun day it was. We learned not only how to make a beautiful quilt but also how to make quilting faster and easier. Heather showed us speedy methods of cutting strips, ironing patches, sewing with out pins, and how to choose colours for our borders. The words 1 snap, cascade, and live spider have new meaning to us.

Heather's method of teaching is fantastic and everyone attending the course enjoyed the day and went home with new information on how to enhance their quilting experience.

Great Turnout for the April Meeting

Table Runner Workshop

Sharron Coxon conducted an other successful table runner workshop on May 29th. The special 10" 60 degree equilateral triangle ruler was used to create these table runners. As you can see by using this tool the table runners were completed quickly and looked perfect!

Heather Stewart

Our speaker for April is Heather Stewart. Heather has taught for guilds and shops in all Canadian provinces and several states. Heather began quilting as a child and has taken her hobby and turned it into a profession. She works full time preparing and giving workshops and lectures. She is a quilt teacher fabric artist, quilt restorer and judge. She also was voted as CQA teacher of the year in 2009. I am looking forward to her lecture at our April meeting. Irene Dewer Workshop - March 15, 2011

Irene Dewer conducted her Cut One Make Two placemat workshop on March 15th. The technique to produce a positive and negative image of a design was interesting and fun. The results were fantastic. Each person's placemat was so different - the material chosen made a big difference to the output. It was a good day and we learned a lot from Irene.

Helping Hands

The Helping Hands contributors really out did themselves this month!! Jennifer Currie received 42 dresses, 32 pair of shorts, 14 tops, 22 skirts, 37 pillow cases, and 6 blankets. Wow! Thank you ladies - great work. We know all these items will be appreciated and used.

Show and Share - March 2011

There was a great response to Betty Ann`s request for old items to be the theme of this month`s Show and Share. Our members brought in quilts made by parents, grandparents or made by themselves many years ago. The stories that were told about the items were fabulous. Who knows maybe a grandchild of mine will one day haul into her Guild something I made...yikes the thought of it!!!

Irene Dewar presented her truck show at our meeting today. Her beautiful work was admired by everyone. Her presentation was fun and very inspiring. Those of us taking her workshop tomorrow are looking forward to a great day. I know we will learn a lot.

Past Presidents Honoured

Eleven of our Guild`s sixteen Past Presidents were present to be honoured at our meeting today. As a token of the Guild`s appreciation Lorna Bawden-Smith, our current president, presented each lady with a special Past President pin. Lorna also thank them for all the work they and their committees have done during the past 25 years.

It is wonderful to have so many of these ladies still members of our Guild.

Tote Bag Workshop - February 24, 2011

On February 24th the Cambridge Street Baptist Church turned into a "bag making" centre. Eleanor Plewes showed us how to make these useful and attractive tote bags. As you can see from the pictures each bag is unique.....it was a great way to use up 5 1/2 inch squares.

Irene Dewar is our speaker in March

In 1983 Irene Dewar took a class and learned to quilt. Almost immediately she joined the Rouge Valley Quilters’ Guild and has been an active member ever since, serving on both the Guild and the Quilt Show Executives in many different capacities, including Program Chair and Quilt Show Convener. Irene has taught countless classes at local quilt shops, workshops at Ontario Quilting Connections’ 6 th Biennial Convention, and was a featured quilter in a Studio 2 production on TVO in March of 2005.

With the encouragement of friends and co-workers, she began to self-publish a line of quilt patterns in 2004 under the name Brambleberry Cottage Quilts.

Her presentation will be amazing!!

BTW....There are some spots left in Irene's workshop for Mar 15th.....contact Lynn Mayotte if you are interested..this will be a great workshop!!

Helping Hands

Our Helping Hands project for Haiti was the topic for our speaker this month. Brenda O'Donahue told us how the children's clothing, made by our members, is so greatly appreciated by the relief groups. Brenda told us about her efforts and experiences during her visit to Haiti last year.

Her talk was very interesting and enlightening. Her overall message was to keep the sewing going!!

Hat Challenge

At January's meeting Elsie Hall introduced her "hat challenge". This challenge will be part of our October's 25th anniversary Victorian Tea. The rules are simple. Create a hat from scratch, find an original hat to wear, or decorate an exiting hat (ie straw hat). Prizes will be given for the best one in each category. Join in the challenge it will be fun!!

January 2011 Meeting

To start off our 25th Anniversary Year we were fortunate to hear from three of our founding members -Joan, Betty Ann and Elda. They took us back to the first meeting in December of 1986 when 8 women met at the home of Florence Staples to talk about forming a Quilting Guild in Lindsay. We sure have come a long way since then!!!

The ladies told stories of how the Guild progressed and showed us samples of some of their early projects. It was a most enjoyable presentation. Thank you so much ladies.

Lorna announced that at the October 2011 meeting we will be celebrating our anniversary with a Victorian Tea. Elsie has also challenged us to a "hat" competition to coincide with this event. More details will be forthcoming in the Newsletter and on the Blog. Stay tuned it will be a fun day!!

Tumbling Block Workshop

On January 6th Sharron Coxon conducted a Tumbling Block workshop at the Cambridge Street Baptist Church. The ladies stated that the had great fun using their new rulers and learning this new technique. These rulers can be used again at Sharron's table runner workshop. This workshop will take place on March 29th.

Vicky La Fleur

Vicky La Fleur, our November speaker, started quilting in 1978 and began teaching in the late 80's. She has conducted workshops in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Nova Scotia as well as quilt shops and guilds throughout Ontario. Vicky was born in Trenton Ontario and continues to live there. She is a member of The Canadian Quilters' Association, The American Quilters' Society, the Trent Valley Quilters' Guild and the Prince Edward County Quilters' Guild.

Vicky's trunk show today showed her amazing design and hand quilting abilities. No wonder her work has received several awards over the years!! It was a joy to view each of her pieces.

Ribbon Embroidery Work Shop - Oct 19

Marilyn Whitbread showed a group of novices how to create beautiful pictures, cards, and embellishments with ribbon embroidery. At the end of the day we each had two completed projects take home. Great method to use to make that special card, picture, or wall hanging.

Sharron Coxon was our guest speaker. She showed us the wonders of using Marci Baker's strip-pieced method to easily create Tumbling Blocks, Hollow Cube, and Honeycomb Waffle quilt blocks. The finished projects she showed us we amazing. Sharron's presentation was very enjoyable (the jokes were great!) and made us all start thinking about 3D quilts.

October Speaker - Sharron Coxon

Sharron Coxon is an accomplish quilter and quilt instructor. Many of her delightful quilts have been shown during our quilt shows and also via Show and Share at Guild meetings. She is also a Past President of our Guild and the founding president of Victoria Quilts Lindsay Branch.

Sharron is always ahead of the curve when it comes to new quilt techniques and designs. Her lecture will show us how to use an easy strip-piecing method for making 3-D eye-catching quilts. Sharron will use Tumbling Blocks to demonstrate this method.

Crazy Eights

The Crazy Eights comprise of eight ladies from the Cobourg - Port Hope area. They challenge each other and themselves to create quilted works of art from boxes/paper bags filled with miscellaneous items. These "items" can range from various colours of cloth, wool, buttons, tinsel, etc. Their trunk show kicked of our new season and was very enjoyable.

September 13th Meeting

Our new president, Lorna Bawden-Smith welcomed all members and guests to the first of many great meeting this year. It was a joy to meet up again with so many enthusiastic quilters. Lorna stated that over the next two years we will be honouring our founding members since 2011 is our 25th anniversary. Lots of fun events and interesting speakers are in the works.
Lorna also mentioned that the charity sewing etc organized by Jennifer Currie will continue. Kudus to Judy Soden. Over the summer Judy made 106 sundresses, 109 wheel chair bags, and 6 pillow cases. Unbelievable!!

The Show and Share was great...wonderful items. Unfortunately I was using a camera that I was not familiar with and only got one picture......but it was the fabulous Halloween quilt.

VE Tour Banner

At the June meeting Gail St Louis showed us a banner she had quilted for Brock High School in Cannington. The banner travelled to Holland with a group of Brock students to be used during the Victory of Europe 65th anniversary parade. The students designed the blocks and Gail did the quilting....what a lot of work but what a great tribute!

Our luncheon was a wonderful way to end the year....with good food and good friends. Special thanks to Donna Macdonald for the setup and the Social Committee for table settings and clean up. The Library Committee went all out with their draw - what great prizes!

At our June meeting Lorna Bawden-Smith thanked Jennifer Currie for her two years as Guild President. As Lorna stated in her speech, Jennifer was a very active and dedicated president. She promoted the Guild through newspaper articles and store displays. She motivated the members with two great "Challenges" which produced amazing results. She also got us all involved in charity causes ( pillow cases, receiving blankets, donating fabric, and sundresses, to name a few).

Thank you Jennifer for two great years.

May Speaker - Kathy K. Wylie

We had a most enjoyable afternoon watching an entertaining and eye catching presentation by award winning quilter Kathy K. Wylie. With the use of projected images and a truck show she showed us how she creates her "Sewflake" quilts. The Lord is My Shepherd, Go Fish, Bridal Tea, and King of Hearts were just some of the examples of her gorgeous work. We were all very inspired by her quilts. Kathy also had her book "Sewflakes" for sale.....many members bought a copy. We are hoping to have Kathy conduct a workshop for us in the new year.

Library Sale

One Block Wonder Workshop

On May 6, Faye Flood introduced us to the mysteries of the One Block Wonder. Frequent exclamations of delight accompanied our progress, through careful matching and cutting, to the almost magical appearance of dozens of little fabric stacks, each containing six identical triangles. Each stack, when arranged in a circle, became an amazing kaleidoscope, every one different, yet all from the same piece of fabric. Now we’re inspired. We can’t wait to finish our projects and see what interesting quilts we’ll end up with. We had fun. And we learned so much! Thank you, Faye.

Library Annual Sale

May 10th Speaker

Since 2002, Kathy Wylie has been speaking and sharing her quilts with trunk shows from one end of the country to the other. Her first entry into international competition earned a third-place ribbon. She has continued to exhibit her quilts, and has received recognition locally, nationally, and internationally. Her first gallery exhibit ran for six weeks early in 2008. That May, she released her first book "Sewflakes" with C&T Publishing. Kathy is interested in a broad spectrum of quilting techniques, but her style would best be described as "contemporary traditional"

Machine Quilting Workshop

Today Eleanor Pastic conducted her Machine Quilting Workshop for a dozen machine quilter wannabes. She showed us how to make quilting designs with a walking foot and feed dogs up......and then how to do free motion quilting.

By the end of the day we were drawing flowers and writing our names with our machines. Great fun!!

Guild Sampler Project

On Tuesday and Thursday of this week, Faye Flood conducted Quilt as You Go workshops. These workshops were organized for all the participants of the Guild Sampler Quilt project. The agenda was to teach the ladies how to join blocks and borders using the QAYG technique. From all reports the class was excellent and everyone enjoyed herself.

Sampler Challenge

Jennifer’s 2010 Quilting Challenge was to design a sampler wall hanging containing four different blocks. It must be larger than 24 square inches but smaller than 50 square inches. Ten members took up the challenge and created some amazing artwork. The quilts were on display at our meeting and everyone enjoyed getting a close look at them.
The three winners of the Challenge were: 1st Frances Emery, 2nd Betty Ann Welsh, and 3rd Jeannette Millar. Congratulations ladies.

Rosemary Makhan April Speaker

Rosemary Makhan was our speaker for the April meeting. She took us back to the “thirties” using examples in her collection to show us fabrics, fashions, patterns, and quilting/needlework methods used during this fascinating era. Rosemary also showed us some of her current work and designs. At the break she was very busy selling her patterns and books to an enthusiastic gathering of quilters. It was a very enjoyable presentation.

Scraptures Workshop

On April 6th, Frances Emery held a Scraptures class at the Cambridge Street Baptist Church. She began the class with a slide presentation showing how to build a Scrapture. The ladies then, with Frances’ techniques and guidance, created their own artwork. Eleanor Pastic was on hand to demonstrate how to use free motion quilting to embellish and complete their pictures. Below are some examples of the ladies’ work sent to me by Frances.

Square in a Square Workshop

From all accounts Gail St Louis' Square in a Square Workshop was a great success. The participants learned some of the many ways to use the special technique ruler. They all left the course with a new knowledge of how to produce perfect squares, stars, etc.

Rosemary Makhan - April 12th Speaker

Rosemary has won many awards for her quilts and in 1993 was chosen Quilting Teacher of the Year by the Canadian Quilting Association. She has lectured and given workshops throughout North America. Rosemary and her business were selected to be in the 2009 Edition of Stanford’s Who’s Who among executives, professionals, and entrepreneurs in Canada.

That Patchwork Place has published several of Rosemary’s books and quilt patterns. She especially loves sampler quilts that are based on a theme, such as her Biblical Blocks and Rose Sampler Supreme.

She also publishes many patterns under her own label Quilts by Rosemary. Rosemary lives in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, with her husband, Chris.

Rosemary will be bringing patterns, etc for us to purchase.

Pam Morrison - March Meeting Speaker

At today's meeting Pam Morrison from Buttonhole Quilt Design gave a power point presentation showing how to create a paper piecing pattern from a photograph. The wall hanging she created of Lindsay's Town Hall was great.

Pam also had a truck show of her work and offered for sale many patterns, kits, and fat quarters.

Annual Celebration - Trent Evening Quilters

Alice Williams, and her Trent Evening Quilters group is holding their Annual Celebration at Trent University on March 27 & 28th (10am to 4pm). As Alice announced during her "Spirit of My Quilts" presentation at our January meeting , our guild members and friends are very welcome to drop in and join the celebration. Alice's group will being working on their current projects plus displaying lots of their complete works. There is no charge for this event and there will be coffee, cake, cookies, and muffins for all. There will also be one vendor selling quilting supplies etc.

The venue is at The Great Hall at Champlain College at the Main Campus at Trent University. When you come to the lights on Hwy 28 (towards Lakefield), turn into Trent U. At the first driveway into Trent U. there's a marquee, and it will tell you the Celebration is happening. There are plenty of signs and indicators to show you the way. Lots of parking.

Sounds like a great event.

Square in a Square

This new rotary cutting and strip piecing technique allows the average quilter to achieve perfect points easily, accurately and fast. If you love the look of intricate patterns but not the work of templates and hand piecing, this method is for you. The result is smooth flat work and accurate points.

Certified Instructor Gail St Louis is teaching a Square in a Square course on March 25th. Sign up for this course at the March meeting or to ensure a spot contact Eleanor Plewes. Gail will be doing a quick overview of this technique at our March meeting.

Pam Morrison - March 8th speaker

Pam Morrison from Buttonhole Quilt Design will be our speaker at the March meeting. Pam has been quilting for a number of years and recently started a business based on her quilting skills. She designs and manufactures original patterns and also offers finished quilts based on these patterns. She also does custom designs as well as quilted pet portraits. She is currently working on a line of quilted cards.

On February 11th the program committee was up at the crack of dawn to help get the Masonic Hall set up for Helen Fujiki's Fuji Wa workshop. At 9:30 the ladies arrived armed with display boards, sewing machines, irons, and tons of beautiful material. Helen started off the day with the Fuji Wa lecture and then the ladies were let loose to design, cut, and sew their creations. They looked gorgeous. Can't wait to see the finished products at a Show and Share.

Pillowcase Project

Jennifer's pillowcase challenge was a great success. Fifty-five of our members participated making a total of one hundred and eighty-four pillow cases. A big thank you to all who participated. Jennifer is keeping the challenge going for an other month...so let's all make at least one more.

On Tuesday morning Jennifer delivered fifty of the pillow cases to Women's Resources in Lindsay. The ladies at the Centre were thrilled! Jennifer is picture with Consuelo from the Victoria Shelter.
